Rolling R’s 33 - Stem-Changing Verbs
January 19, 2008
In episode 33 of Rolling R’s, Larry overviews the concept of “stem-changing verbs”. He introduces the verb “empezar” which means “to begin”, and is an example of a stem-changing verb that changes from “e” to “ie”.

Welcome Back!
I really appreciate your efforts to create these podcasts. For the past year and a half, I have been helping a Mexican lady learn English. She insists that I learn Spanish so that I can understand what is going on at family gatherings. Thanks for your help.

First off, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind comments. I appreciate your support and I’m very glad that so many of you have found these lessons to be a helpful part of your Spanish learning process.
Tom,
Thanks for being the first to post a video comment! In addressing your double L question - I would say that there is no solid right or wrong, but that it is mostly about regional pronunciation norms.
As I’m sure you know, there are about 20 different Spanish speaking countries. And there is considerable variation in pronunciation and word usage not only between the different countries, but even between different regions within a single country.
Having said that, I would agree that Colombian Spanish is a nice sounding Spanish — clear and easy to understand for the non-native Spanish speaker. Interestingly, going back to the LL sound, I’ve found that the people in Paraguay pronounce the double L (and the Y, as in Yo) with an even stronger “J” sound.
Lastly, I wanted to mention that I think it’s very cool that you’re involved in cycling. I know that there are many great Colombian cyclists. Many excellent climbers! I’ve always had a love for bicycles. Just this past summer I traveled to Ashland, OR and attended the United Bicycle Institute’s Professional Mechanics and Shop Operation Course. Much of the weight that I’ve recently lost is due to getting back on my bicycle. I could go on and on about bicycles . . .
Anyway, thank you for watching Rolling R’s.
All the best,
Larry Keim

Hello, i was wondering if you could explain or teach how to roll your r with your tongue. I have never been able to do this and would like to be able to so that my spanish is better. Also can a person purchase the rolling r’s to watch on dvd on their tv at home, due to the fact they dont have internet connection.
