Great introduction to Spanish. My wife and I are trying to learn spanish and have been taking classes, but the fundamentals were passed through so quickly that we missed many important bits of information. This is an excellent way to go slowly enough to get a firm grasp on those fundamental.

I find your website very helpful and I love listening to you, although nor English nor Spanish is my firts language. Just want to let you know that several pages does not include the video on your site, only a picture of it.
I believe there should be a video since it is saying underneath.

Oh, wow! This is one of the best episodes yet. First of all, the content is fantastic and the advice you give to become acquainted with “relaxed speech” is very helpful.

But I absolutely love how it was presented. I find that even “slow Spanish” (e.g. “News in Slow Spanish”) can be a tad fast. I think they mean “slow for native speakers”, which is different from speech appropriate for people who are learning (e.g. still using the thought process of llegó -> llegar -> to arrive -> preterite -> he/she/it arrived -> use context to determine he/she/it). I can use your advice for getting the “gist”, and once I determine the infinitive, use context for the rest. I also love how you slipped in bits of English for words you through needed clarification. Please speak more to us in Spanish … this was *brilliant*!

BTW, one music group that I find very listenable from a learner’s standpoint is Sui Generis, an Argentine rock band from the 70′s. The singing is somewhat slow and (mostly) clear. Somewhat Beatlesque and interesting from a political perspective; Argentina was going through some rough times in the 70′s.

Very helpful lesson to people like me who have a decent amount of grammar under the belt. Seems like the biggest stumbling blocks are hearing/speaking Spanish at the speed of conversation and these “glue words” that turn sterile sentences into living breathing conversation.

One question concerning this lesson: What is the “de” doing in the two sentences:

Además de esto, tenemos esto también.

Por ejemplo, debemos de practicar esta frase.

I wouldn’t have used “de” in either sentence. Is there some grammar rule concerning this?
